Makeup is easy after you have learned the basic tips & tricks, but damn near impossible when you have to figure it out on your own. Once someone explains the purpose for all the different makeup brushes, you will never forget it. I connected with one of my favourite makeup artists from South Africa to give us all her secrets. Below are the most commonly asked questions makeup artists receive daily. Let's take a deeper look into the life of Gen & how she SLAYS.
First things first, let's take a look into Gen's personal life & get to know her a little more. She describes herself as a self-taught makeup artist who believes "everything happens for a reason". She is fascinated with astrology & her star sign is Leo. Gen told us that she began doing makeup at the age of 15 & she learnt a lot from her sister who studied makeup. She tweaked some of the techniques her sister had taught her to how they would work for herself.

How do you stay motivated during quarantine?
"Makeup is a form of therapy for me. When I do makeup I go into a different universe, & I forget everything going on in the world. I have had moments during quarantine where I felt like giving up & it felt as if nothing I was doing was good enough. This lasted for about 3 weeks, but I continued doing makeup by pushing through, everything has kind of been falling into place. I feel as though makeup is my calling & it's what I am meant to do in life & it is what keeps me motivated, my passion"
It is understandably a very difficult time especially for creatives to find that urge to create & find new ways to translate their creativity. Right now is a very important period to appreciate everything you are & really ensure your own mental health is a priority.
Favourite celebrity makeup look?
"Definitely Kim Kardashian done by Nikki Makeup. She did a grey & white cut crease which was so clean, dewy & it enhanced Kim's features. It was minimal but so bold & something I've never seen on Kim K before".

"My purple drag queen leopard look is definitely my favourite. It was so different & my first time ever doing drag."

How long does it take to do your makeup?
"It completely depends on the look! Everyday makeup 15-25minutes, Glam look 45minutes, Artistic - intricate details is around 45 minutes to 3 hours"

Who inspires you to do your makeup?
"Honestly my followers inspire me to do makeup. I have people who I've never met, support me & encourage me so much & that itself is so inspiring. They bring so much happiness & it lifts me up, & motivates me to keep on doing makeup. I don't have any specific makeup artists that I look up to, I think I'm on this crazy journey of my own & I just do looks that I like. I very rarely follow trends. I find a lot of inspiration from Pinterest, there's such a wide variety & it's amazing"
How do you keep your skin healthy ?
"My skin is extremely temperamental. It will be good for weeks & then just acts up. I can get a small breakout or get cystic acne & I'm left with scars on my skin which is definitely a confidence killer. I keep my skin routine very minimal, I don't enjoy putting too many rich products on my skin & I keep the amount of products I use to a minimum".
